  Salmon in the Valley

We really have to congratulate Christopher Hall, Dr. David Clements and Liz Robertson for the success of the “Salmon in the Valley” field trip program this spring.  I was there this morning and watched a Grade 4 class from Abbotsford as they thoroughly enjoyed the games and the education that the field trip provides.  The Trinity students Christopher has hired to lead the elementary classes are doing an exceptional job.  The Trinity students (most of them are education students) had to apply to be a leader for the field trips which provides them this year with a month of paid work.

Thanks also to Karen Steensma , Bev Bowler and all the others who helped set up the program as it finishes its fourth year.   This year 22 Grade 4 classes participated (SRES funded the trips for 12 Langley classes) and a pilot was done for the Grade 5 curriculum.  So we hopefully can look forward to an even bigger program in the future.

If anyone wants to see the program there are 2 more school groups going through next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.  If you drive through the campus to the Fosmark Centre (signs point you right just after you pass the gym complex and then take the next left) you can park in the lot.  The classes start at about 9:30 am from the concrete field house between the Fosmark parking lot and the soccer field.  They are at the field house until just after 10 and then they walk out to the field to the right of the parking lot before going on the trails in the environmental reserve.

Nb all the classes are heading home with lots of goodies including posters, stickers, pencils, rulers and key chains from DFO, Kinkos and Mills.  The students also get a certificate thanking them for coming on the program and they get a copy of brochures from the Salmon in the Valley program and the new SRES brochure.  SRES has also contributed a copy of “All the Way to The Ocean” by Joel Harper (one of the books in our environmental library) to each class.
